What Is Binge Eating Disorder?

The National Eating Disorder Association defines Binge Eating Disorder as a severe yet treatable eating disorder “characterized by recurrent episodes of eating large quantities of food [and] a feeling of a loss of control during the binge". Unlike Bulimia, those with Binge Eating Disorder do not regularly purge.

Even though it’s the most common eating disorder, it’s less accepted by medical professionals. Because most people with Binge Eating Disorder don’t look like they have an eating disorder, we work towards validating your experience and shame associated with being dismissed by many for so long. Most who struggle with Binge Eating Disorder have tried Anorexia and Bulimia before, but couldn’t tolerate the restriction or compensations.

We believe that food is a symptom of a larger entity, rather than the source of Binge Eating behaviors. Often times, the root cause is an immense amount of body dissatisfaction, shame, a low distress tolerance, impulsivity, trauma, isolation, and other contributing factors that we hope to help you unearth.

What to Expect During Therapy for Binge Eating Disorder

Therapy for Binge Eating Disorder addresses the root cause rather than just your behavior around food. We’ll work with you to improve your distress tolerance so you can build a healthier relationship with yourself and past experiences.

We’ll also work on breaking down body acceptance, biases around body types, and how to better channel impulses through a weight-neutral-based approach. The weight neutral approach focuses on body individuality and seeks to remove a weight-focused approach to health. We respect the diversity of body shapes and sizes.

Those working through the foundational sources of Binge Eating Disorder can benefit from both individual and group therapy.

Through this relational and psychodynamic approach, we’ll work with you to challenge your pre-existing ideas, begin using distress tolerance tools, and reduce impulsivity. As a result, we’ll help you foster body acceptance, improve interpersonal relationships, and experience increased life satisfaction.
